{Flying home for Christmas - The happy end}

Hi!

So here's part 3 of my story:

I. A.M. H.O.M.E.

With some delays due to bad weather I was in Luxembourg at around 15h30 :) Familytime...

P.S. My luggage was probably send to Lugano, Swiss. Nice work Air France.

{Flying home for Christmas?}

Hi!

I have a lot of time on my hands for posting these days, so here's a follow up. I actually slept in a bed tonight! Yay for me :)

So, where did I leave off? Oh, yes, I had rescheduled my flight and wanted a hotelroom... Mmm, well, I got one obviously. But it sounds easier as it was. First of all, there are loads of people stranded so it is very full and busy here. The Air France lounge is my saviour though(this sounds like Air France lounge = Jesus, hmmm), since there are no lines existent or at least the are shorter.

They had a lot of problems booking me a room though, since my flight to Luxembourg is operated by Luxair. Still, after 4 hours of waiting and walking back and forth to the counter, and some tears, I got a room for the night including dinner and breakfast.

First, I had to take a bus there, which was kinda hard to find, since the TGV station was crowded with stranded passengers too, but I found it. Then I got at the hotel, got a nice room, and finally after TWO days took a bath :) I then was so tired I actualy fell asleep for two hours or so. At 22h00 I woke up, got dressed and dragged myself down to the restaurant. I felt like I was sleepwalking, but I had to eat something, so I had salmon with bread and peas. Yay, real food. I then went up and fell asleep again.

At 7h30 I got my wakeup call, since I don't own an alarmclock anymore. I took a shower again, to make up for the last days, haha, got dressed and had breakfast. At the same time I was stalking all websites with departures and arrivals at CDG and Luxembourg and weather forecasts. At 9h00 I went down to check out and take the bus to the airport, where I am now.

It still looks good, the earlier plane from CDG is boarding and the plane from Luxembourg should be here in an hour. That plane is supposed to fly me home later today. I am hoping and praying it'll work and I'll let you know.

Loads of love from Paris!
[Hoping it is the last time I'll say this]

{Flying home for christmas, or not.}

People!

Okay, so I promised I'd write from Luxembourg next time, but today I'm writing from Paris, France. Karma.

So, I was sceduled to fly from JFK to Paris CDG on saturday at 21h45. I'd arrive at CDG at 11h00 and then fly on to Luxembourg at 12h40, where I'd arrive at 13h30. Well, it all got a little problematic when the weather decided it'd be fun it there were snow everyday in the whole of central and western Europe.

So, when I arrived at JFK about 5 hours early(I shared a cab with someone leaving at 17h00), it turned out my luggage was overweight. I had to take out 7 of the 30 kilo's, so then I went wandering the terminal with books and my coats...

Okay, then I want to get through security, but it is the saturday before Christmas, so it is crowded, with a capital C. I'm becoming an expert at cueing these days. Then, while waiting at security I saw that my flight was delayed for an hour and a half. We were now sceduled to take off at 23h10.

So I spend the rest of the night chillin' at the Air France Lounge on JFK :) These lounges have saved my life the last days. By the time we took off it was 23h45. The flight to Paris was okay, I even slept for 5 hours or so. The we landed in a white snowy world. At CDG we were parked somewhere and then had to wait for 2 hours in the plane, before we could taxi to the gate, since all the gates were occupied. Then we had to wait for groundpersonell to attach the gate to the plane :)

Okay, then I was in terminal 2E, my flight to Luxembourg was cancelled and I didn't have a boardingcard to get into terminal 2D(were the flights to luxembourg leave), so I had to cue in 2E at an Air France helpdesk. In the cue I made some friends with some American and Dutch people :) After SEVEN hours of waiting(standing , pushing and no food/drinks) I was finally at the counter, where an Air France employee told me I had to leave Terminal 2E and go to the Luxair checkin in terminal 2D. So I had just spend all afternoon and evening cueing for nothing...

At around 22h00 I arrived at terminal 2D, where everything was closed. I couldn't find a Luxair representative and decided it'd be better to spend the night at the airport and go to Air France again in the morning. I installed myself at a radiator in Terminal 2D with two coats, hanging on my bag. Midnight the "Protection Civile" woke me up, asked if I was alone and when I answered yes, they told me it was too dangerous. They had some blankets and water in a trminal downstairs, so I spend another 5 hours there.

At 5h00 on Monday morning I went to Terminal 2D, they let me in without the boardingpass once I explained the situation and then I, again, cued for tyhe Airfrance desk, although it wasn't going to open for another hour or so. Two hours later I was at the counter again and this time it was no problem booking me onto another flight. I was assigned the 12h40 flight to Luxembourg. Then it started snowing again... So the flight was cancelled. Surprising. I then decided to see if there was any way to get my checked luggage back. At the luggage counter we were given forms to fill out, s the luggage could be sent to us in about 2-3 days.

Well, even so, I still wanted to find a way home. So I enquired after the trains. Well no one on the airport knows anything, I called home and heard that the CFL had announced there would be any trains coming into or leaving Luxembourg. So I resceduled my flight again to tomorrow morning and am now waiting for a hotelroom, which is quite a problem, since there are so many people stuck.

That is it for now, I'll update again when I know more.

{Living on a prayer.}

Dear God,

Thank you for answering my prayer for a white christmas, but it is a week too early. So now I am praying to you to make it stop snowing, or I won't be able to see that white winter wonderland in Luxembourg. Thank you and amen.

{Muhahaha, guess who I saw}

Hello pumpkins!

How are you all doin'?? I'm great. I am in the air in 72 hours, on my way to Paris :) So I am freaking out woth excitement.

Here it is getting cold, on monday we had outr first real snow for this winter! But now it's just cold, which is less cool, since I almost killed my toes and fingers today while I was waiting for an hour and a half to see Jessica Alba, Ben Stller, Robert De Niro, Owen Wilson and Dustin Hoffman :)

But in the end, it was all worth it: I did see them(no pictures this time, I forgot my camera *blond*) and I can live with 8 toes and 8 fingers ;) As long as I can hold my cup of Starbucks...

Today I did part two of my christmas shopping in Manhattan, and I'm planning of finishing the present hunt in Palisades Mall on friday. Familymembers: You will get spoiled by all the presents :P

I also finished gathering all the required documents for the universities I'm applying to. There has been a small change of plans, instead of the University of Washington in Seattle I am applying to Smith College, an all-womens college in Northhampton, MA. I'll update on the applications some more when I get home :)

For now, love to all and enjoy the holiday season. I know I do.

{10 more days...}

... and Luxembourg is the unsafest capital in world, because I'm there again :)

So, SAT World History is done. I'll let you guys know when I get the results in. Now coming up this Saturday is the TOEFL on which I have to score 104/120 or higher to be eligible for the universities I've choosen. Have I told you which ones I'm applying to? I didn't think so... Here's the list in order of soonest deadlines.

1. University of Washington - Seattle, WA
Deadline: December 15th, 2010
Status: working on the essays and the apllications/starting to stess a little bit...
2. Yale University - New Haven, CT
Deadline: December 31st, 2010
Status: working on the Common App, got some essays done, working on others
3. Williams College - Williamstown, MA
Deadline: January 1st, 2011
Status: working on the Common App, no essays started yet :s
4. University of Chicago - Chicago, IL
Deadline: January 3rd, 2011
Status: working on the Common App and essays
5. Georgetown University - Washington, D.C.
Deadline: January 10th, 2011
Status: haven't started on anything yet...

And then I am applying to 1 or 2 partner schools from EF, but their deadlines are in March, so I'm not worrying about those yet.

For all of these schools I'm taking either just TOEFL or TOEFL and SAT or TOEFL, SAT and SAT subjects :)

Then, to the less boring and more exciting news: I SAW ANGELINA JOLIE, BRAD PITT AND JOHNNY DEPP!! I went to the premiere of The Tourist(well, actually, I kinda stood outside freezing) and took the greatest pictures, which you can find on my facebook and hopefully soon on my youtube channel... It was really cool to see them from up close :D

That's it for now, I'm gonna go have lunch, and I will write you again soon!

{Today in 3 weeks}

Hi!

So now you are all wondering what's happening today in 3 weeks. Well, at 10.35 p.m. Eastern time, I am taking off from JFK to Paris and then to Luxembourg :D Home, sweet home...

But first I have a few busy weeks ahead of me. Next saturday I have my SAT World History subject test, and than the saturday after I have my TOEFL test. Also, in a week, my finals start for my UFY subjects. I have to write about 10-15 essays for college applications and the application deadlines are getting closer...

Also, I have to do some serious Christmas shopping for mi familia :) And ofcourse I want to enjoy Manhattan at holiday season time.

So whoever said the holiday season is stressfull, I agree. But then again, I *heart* Christmas, so in the end all the stress is worth it...

I'll keep you updated on my tests, applications and shopping, but first: B.R.U.N.C.H., the best meal of the day :D

Love to all!

P.S. I WANT SNOW!!

{Brooklyn without a map}

Hi guys!

As promised more updates!!! I had a busy day yesterday: I packed all my stuff and moved to the campus, to St. Johns 505 :)

In the afternoon I went to NYC with Jenny and Katharina, the coolest germans ever :D We decided to go to the Brooklyn Bridge, which I hadn't seen yet... So we took the subway from Grand Central, changed to another subway and then got gloriously lost in Chinatown and Little Italy.

After asking around we did get to the bridge *smile* Loads of pictures were taken, just love looking like a tourist. Then on the bridge we bumped into two guys from EF who were riding a tandem :) So, I rode down the bridge towards Brooklyn on the back of a tandem, a once in a lifetime experience :P

So we got to Brooklyn safe and sound. We wanted to eat something so we went looking for a place that looked nice. One tip: never, ever go walking through Brooklyn without knowing where you're going, or at least a map. Allthough we didn't find a place to eat, we did get home after stalking some people for directions to the subway adn walking up and won some street three times.

So another adventurous day in the life of...

{Fieldday EF New York '10 - GO GREEEEEEEN!!}

Hi!!!

I know, it is horrible, I haven't updated enough. But I promise, lots of posts coming up!

Now, yesterday was Fieldday '10 at EF :) I was in team green which consisted of the people from the 5th and 6th floors in St. John's and Ursula's and the hostfamily students. We didn't win, at the end of the day it was a tie between team green and team blue and we were judged on who cheered the loudest...

Well since team green had less people, team blue won. So congrats to them and I now live with this quote by Nixon:

“You must never be satisfied with losing. You must get angry, terribly angry, about losing. But the mark of the good loser is that he takes his anger out on himself and not his victorious opponents or on his teammates.”

So, that was yesterday, talk to you tomorrow.

P.S. Tomorrow: I'M MOVING TO THE CAMPUS :D Just so y'all know, if you would like my new adress, send me an email...

{I got a new skirt}

Heyy guys,

Since It is crazy warm here in New York, I bought a new skirt. It's short and white and from Stefanel. It only cost me $ 3,- at a thriftshop here in Tarrytown, called Deja Vu.

I know you dig it :P

xxx

{I *heart* NYC}

Hi!!!!

Okay, so here's my NYC story. I've went with the train from Tarrytown to Grand Central, it cost me about $ 20,- and it took 35 minutes. I arrived at Grand Central terminal at around 10 'o clock wedensday morning.

I then got gloriously lost in All the people and streets, but even getting lost is great in NYC :P But I found the way back to 5th avenue, thanks to my filofaxmap of Manhattan, my new best friend.

So I strolled down 5th avenue, went to Sachs 5th ave, Henri Bendels, Bergdorf and Goodman etc. etc. But I didn't buy a thing :D something of which I am very proud. I also went Into St. Patricks Cathedral. 3 Hours later I arrived at the Plaza Hotel and the south entrance of Central Parc. I had lunch in Central parc and then walked down Madison ave towards 42nd steet.

I then headed east to Times square, where I bought a I<3NY T-shirt for only $ 3,- :) After that I went into some more shops on my way back to Grand Central, I got some Starbucks on the way and took the train back to Tarrytown.

So that was my first trip to NYC, lots of shopping, little cultural stuff. But that'll come lateron I guess.

Loves to all...

P.S. I'm now addicted to Reeses Peanutbuttercup Icecream :)

{My new home}

Heeyy peopelies :)

How ya'll doing??

Yesterday evening I arrived at my new home. I'm living with a host family, their house is about 20 minutes walking from the campus. I'm sharing my room with another girl, who's arriving on thursday.

Compared to the rooms on campus, where you share the room with 3 others and you don't have inet in your room, I think I already prefer a hostfamily.

Today I walked down to the Hudson, exploring Sleepy Hollow a little. I than walked to Tarrytown, did some window-shopping :) And I was in a supermarket and a drugstore, I love supermarkets and drugstores here!

Ow, and tomorrow I'm going to NYC :D Grand Central, Times Square, 5th Avenue etc. etc.

PICTURES of my first day :)

Hi guys,

To make it easier and more fun, I've put a few pictures from my journey from Junglinster to Tarrytown into a youtube video :)

P.S. I slept on campus last night because it was too late to go to my host, but this afternoon at 4 p.m., I'm going there, so I'll let you know all about it tonight.

{EF-UFY University Foundation Year 101}

Hi!

So, for everyone who’s been asking me or themselves what a University Foundation Year is, I’m explaining it in detail right here.

Alright, so I am doing the UFY in New York, though I think that the program is the same at every EF school in the US. The EF New York school is located in Tarrytown, a 40 minute train ride from Manhattan. Before the EF school the campus was used by Marymount college. Ef bought the campus in 1991 I think.

EF offers 2 programs in the US, a 6-month or a 9-month program. I’m doing the 9-month program, which starts the 23rd of September.

So basically a UFY is a year in which you improve your English and prepare for college in the US. The year starts with focusing on English skills and test preparation in the fist months and working towards university readiness later on. It’s also later in the ear that you can choose elective courses. I’ll list the courses and elective courses below(for a 9-month UFY) with the periods(80 minutes) a week.
•Term 1: SAT preparation-3/Academic vocabulary-3, TOEFL skills-5, Writing fundamentals-2, Grammar and pronunciation-4, University application workshop-2
•Term 2: Advanced TOEFL-4, Academic writing and grammar-3, Advanced reading-2, Advanced culture and communications-2, Application workshop-1, College survival skills-2 , Elective-2
•Term 3: Research writing-3, Advanced college lecture series-2, Critical reading and analysis-2, Communicative presentations-3, 3 Electives-3x2
•Electives: Advanced business concepts, Business basics, Creative writing, Crime, Community service learning, Debates, Drama, History of music, Psyology, International political economy
These are just some examples, they vary according to location.

So, this is basically what I’m going to do this year, though I guess except for attending school I’ll be shopping, browsing through NYC and hopefully have a lot of fun  Ow, and I’ve got holidays too.
Orientation: 23-26/09/2010
Term 1: 27/09/2010 ‘till 17/12/2010(12 weeks)
Christmas break: 18/12/2010 ‘till 9/01/2011
Term 2: 10/01/2011 ‘till 11/03/2011(9 weeks)
Spring break: 12/03/2011 ‘till 27/03/2011
Term 3: 28/03/2011 ‘till 3/06/2011
That was all I can tell you guys now about the UFY, I’m sure I’ll be telling a lot more about it throughout my year :)

Talk to ya’ll later

{LUX-CDG-JFK}

Heyy guys,
So I am on my plane to JFK :) but by the time I upload this, I’ll be in my new house…

As I said earlier, I flew from Luxembourg to Paris at 16h35. I arrived at about 17h20 at CDG. Then I had to walk my way from Hall 2D to 2E, it’s quite a distance, but I made it easily. I went through customs and then to the Skyteam lounge, free drinks, food, internet and comfy chairs. I love my frequent flyer card. When I left the lounge I thought how cool it’d be to upload to blogger from the lounge, but too late :s

{So today is the day...}

Hello everyone,

In approx. 5 hours I will leave home to go to the airport... EXCITING!!

I've cleaned out my room(I've got one closet, three drawers, a bookcase and a small cabinet filled with all thats left behind), I've got a suitcase that fits all, but is overweight(still some work to do) and I've got all my paperwork as far as I can tell.

Why doesn't anyone ever tell you how hard it is to pack up all the important stuff and leave for 3 months?? Well, I might be a bit overconcious on the clothing/fashion part, but I'd just hate to have left a piece of clothing behind and then find out that I needed it...

So, I'm going to try to thow out some stuff to get 6 kilo overweight on my suitcase of.

Talk to you soon...

{30 hours to go}

Heyy guys,

Now everyone is probably thinking how bad I am at math, but the 30 hours are right :)
My flight has been cancelled, changed, whichever, and I'm now flying tomorrow at 4.30 p.m. from Luxembourg to Paris, than at 7.10 p.m. from Paris to JFK.

Right now I'm starting to stress, since I still have to clean out my room, pack my stuff and socialize at the same time :)

But I've still got 30 hours to go, chill, take a deep breath and carry on.

P.S. I GOT MY VISA :DDD

Tuesday, 31 August 2010

{Visa Interview :)}

Heyy guys,

So, I'm trying to write more often, especially since my NYC adventure is getting closer :)

Today I had an appointment at the US Embassy in Luxembourg for my visa interview. I'm going to the States on an F1 visa, a non-immigrant studentvisa. Next to the paperwork they need from you, you also have an interview at the embassy/consulate.

I had my appointment at 10h20, though I was there 30 minutes early (A) They checked my passport and then I was told to wait the other 30 minutes outside :) So I went into the city to have a coffee.

At 10h20 I was alowed inside. I had to leave all electronic devices and fluids and stuff like that behind with security. Then I had to go through one of those metal detector thingies. It was like airport security ;)

After the securitycheck I was escorted to the second building, where an employer of the embassy checked my documents and I paid the $ 140,- fee for the interview. The documents for an F1 are the I20 from the school that I'm attending, the DS160 that I filled out online, the SEVIS payment(another $ 200,-, yes a visa is expensive :), a certificat de residence, bank statement(to show my parents can support me, my passport and an envelope to send my passport back when there done with it.

Then my name was called, I entered a small room. A woman took my fingerprints and asked me what exactly EF UFY is and I could leave again.

So that was my visa interview :) Then I was escorted out again, got my stuff back and I was good to go. What an interesting life huh?? :D

Plans for the rest of the day? Going to see Salt in la Utopolis and I'm gonna get my perfect suitcase at Cactus :) I'll talk about THE suitcase later.

{2 months away from NYC}

Hi!

Today is exactly 2 months until I flyflyfly to NYC :) I'm so excited about this huge change in my life and have decided to keep everyone updated on my NYC adventure through my blog.

At the moment though, I'm still working at the Grandcafé/restaurant in Diekirch for another month or so. It's getting busier, which is way more fun, but also way more tyring, since I'm now working 6 days a week. So my saturday and sunday are on one day: Monday.

I've really enjoyed my free day yesterday, especially since I took my parents out to dinner at La Pomme Canelle in Hotel Royal in Luxembourg city :) The food was great and the bill was big, but it was worth it, a night to remember.

This is it for now, I'm gonna get ready for work!

1st day of work!

OMG, I haven't blogged in over 2 months!!!

A lot has changed in my life since then... In short: I quit college, moved back to Luxembourg and got a job. It's for four months on a campside in Diekirch, a village in Luxembourg. It's a 30 minute drive from my house to work, so that's quite ok.

I'm starting today at noon :) I'm working there from May 1st 'till August 20th, maybe longer depending on my next college choice.

Goodbye for now, I gotta get ready!

Heyy

A post from home, Luxembourg :) Time has gone too fast this weekend and I'm packing and getting ready to leave for Rotterdam again, but I wanted to post something :) I know I've promised to post something bigger this week, maybe I'll get to it tonight...

It's been snowing all day here and Luxembourg seems to be covered in snow every time I'm here, so I'm happy I got a car here and my fake 20-euro UGG's :D Ow, and a special thanks to my dad for the warm jogging suit he borrowed me, I just never take pyjama's, I always borrow them and I really wanna take the ones I'm wearing now with me... Heyy ya all!

It's 12.30 p.m. here now and I've been studying in the library for 3 hours now on a monday morning... It's starting to sound nerdy, but I've calculated that on average I should be working 10 hours a day on uni stuff, without counting classes :O A shocking fact huh?

Well, with that in mind, I dragged myself out of bed at 7 a.m., although classes start at 1 p.m.!

That's all for today, I promise I'll post a bigger post later this week :)

First of all, I wanna wish my big sis', Florentine, a good flight to Washington D.C., as she is in the air right now, and an amazing and swell time over there and the internship in the renaissance mayflower...

Now then to my little problems in life :) I've got a room in Rotterdam, but it's to far from uni(we're not on campus here) and I really wanna move in with two of my friends, who both wanna buy a house. So it still sounds great, two houses, my pick :) But we've decided to find to houses next to each other, which makes this a whole different story... It's really hard to find two houses in the right price/quality range. But we're trying, and in the end, I just really need a new room before July 14th(thats when my rent stops here).

So now you know what's going on I'm gonna by browsing for housing some more :)

{I love the french dream}

Heyy ya all :)

I love the dream of the perfect french woman. She has style, she eats delicious food and stays slim and she has it all in love...

Let's start with the style aspect. The best designers in the world are from France: Louis Vuitton, Yves Saint Laurent and my personal favourite Coco Chanel to name a few :) So the perfect french woman has style in her genes. The question is more: how could she not have style? A black/white striped shirt, a baret and perfume are a few famous signatures for french style.

Now to the food :) First of all, when people think of the french they think red wine, french cheese and café au lait. It is said that the french eat not only healthy, but most importantly of all: FRESH. The women don't work out at the gym to stay slim, they walk to get their groceries. Their fresh high quality ingredients aren't all from the same grocerystore, they go to markets and small stores, so they do walk a lot. Lastly to the coffee, I just <3 café au lait in the morning, in the afternoon and in the evening :) I even enjoy making it since I bought my new and perfect milk creamer...

And love... It is said that in France it's fairly normal for a husband to have a mistress and that french men are real good at making love :) Ow, and I personally associate France with lingerie, french women are supposed to be wearing dazzling, sexy and luxiourious lingerie all the time...

So much about my obsession with the french, have a great night!

{live. love. loft.}

Heyy ya all!

A late night message from Holland :)

I've found the solution to my little bathroom freezing problem: showering at the gym! I have a gym membership at David Lloyd Rotterdam and this month I've been there about 2 times *shame*

So this morning I worked out and showered, and tomorrow morning I'll go there at 7a.m., maybe lie in the sauna for 10-15 minutes, shower and go back home to dropp off my stuff, before racing to college :D

It's genious ain't it??

Ow, and as to the title, I just got mail from WhoWhatWear(a great website)about a special thing they arrange with LOFT clothing, a photoshoot in LA and a new wardrobe from LOFT :) Just to let you know, 'cause I can't participate...

{Good morning}

Heyy

Well, it's now 7 a.m. here and freezing in my room, but I'm hoping it'll get warmer :)

And now I'm of to my bathroom, where it is so cold, because the heating doesn't work and there is a door to the balcony, that doesn't close right... So there is always enough fresh air ;)

Have a great day you all!

{Metro, tram, bus and train}

Heyy

Yeah, it's me again... this time a mobile update :)

I've got a confession to make... I'm sometimes totally and utterly blonde, in the clischee way of the expression. Yes, sometimes I'm a dumb blonde ;)

I've gotten in the wrong metro from my friends house,which means that I'm now standing in the freezing cold, waiting for a tram that's too late. And I'm bored and cold... Wait, I already said that :)

Well, anyway, I just wanted to share my stupidnesss
with you... Aaahh, I've just let another tram pass :(

Everything is against me :( Oh well, lets not get depressed...

*It took me over an hour to get home, instead of 20 minutes...

{Goals and keeping to them}

Heyy

I'm now at a friends house, but wanted to update my new blog :)

I've read about 3/4 chapters of the 6 I need to read today, but I'm working on it... Allthough not right now, but I will in the metro and train home. Setting goals is nice, but keeping to them is harder than I thought.

But I've still got tonight, and tomorrow is another day. That's my usual thinking, but it works if you wanna sleep tight :)

Sweet dreams everyone

{Reading, reading, reading}

Heyy

So for today there are 6 chapters on my literature reading menu :s 1 for macroeconomics, my most important course in economics at the time, and 5 for law, I'm starting a new course tomorrow :)

I'm trying to keep up with the literature, because it does help to have read(at least part of) it. And since my results until now weren't the best, I need to pass every course for the rest of the year, if I want to continue this study...

Now I gotta read, I've got a seminar at 1pm, but first I'm making pancakes at a friends house :)

Have a great day!

Heyy

I'm Charline, live in Rotterdam and I'a freshman at Erasmus university, where I study Dutch law & Economics.

I've tried blogging before, stopping after generally 2 post, so let's try it again. I'm just reflecting on my life, maybe I'll find something special to blog about :)

I would love feedback on my blog, it's harder than it seems.
